Elodie Marandon, Dream in the botanical garden V - Xoloitzcuintle, 2021, watercolor and gouache on paper, 32,9 x 43,5 cm
Elodie is working on a painting series entitled Dreams in the botanical garden. The compositions are made from plants and other landscape elements that she saw during various trips. Some animals, birds in particular, are taking over those dreamlike abandoned spaces. The atmospheres are quiet and silent, although disseminate strangeness.
This painting has been inspired by the botanical garden of UNAM in Mexico City. The main character is a Xoloitzcuintle dog, represented twice. The one on the left is observing the other one quietly sleeping. In mexican Pre-Colombian cultures, this type of dogs were guides to the soul on its journey to the underworld. They were also considered as protection against malicious spirits.
